Annual Intercollegiate Taiko Invitationals

It’s almost time for the Annual Intercollegiate Taiko Invitationals!

This year will mark the 19th event, which will be hosted by our friends at UCSD, Asayake Taiko.  The first invitationals was held in Stanford, CA among the three first collegiate taiko groups: Stanford Taiko, UCLA’s Kyodo Taiko, and UCI’s Jodaiko.  Now, there are 14 groups, some coming as far as Oregon!

There will be two free concerts, which are open to the public.

We are looking forward to expanding our taiko knowledge, meeting new and old friends, and just having a fun, taiko-filled weekend!…

Annual Spring Concert: Dungeons and Drummers

Hello friends, family, fellows, …foes?

We would like to cordially invite you to our Annual Spring Concert titled, “Dungeons and Drummers.”  Many of our members have found a side interest in Dungeons and Dragons, a role-playing game where one can use their imagination to unfurl a novel adventure.

Since the Fall quarter, we have been working very hard: training both our recent recruits and ourselves, learning and teaching new songs, and gaining many, many blisters.  If you were present at our last two Spring Concerts, this year’s concert will have the same story-line format, where skits act as transitions between songs (play on words intended!).  If you haven’t watched any of our concerts, you’re definitely in for a treat!

Now that it’s Spring, we are in a time crunch for our concert, 4PM (doors open @3:30PM) on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the University Theatre (see link below for map).

We are featuring various pieces from our repertoire, a few of which can be seen here.  You will also hear and feel two new pieces, written by our very own David McKnight and Charlotte Kane.  This will be David’s second original piece; his first composition, Densha, debuted at our last Spring Concert.  We look forward to presenting his latest creative work!  Also, we are honored to perform Charlotte’s first original taiko piece; don’t miss out!  But wait, there’s more!  (I promise, no more surprises!)  We are resurrecting a piece that hasn’t been played since 2009 titled Worries of it’s Own.  We hope that you enjoy this piece, whether you’ve heard it before or not.

Stay on the lookout for updates on ticket prices either from here or our event page. Once again:

Who: Senryu Taiko

What: Spring Concert: Dungeons and Drummers

When: Saturday, April 27, 2013, 4PM (doors open 3:30PM)

Where: University Theatre (see bottom left corner of campus)

Why: Why not?  But really, because you don’t want to miss out on the taiko and mounds of fun!

Please join us in our timeless quest!

Five adventurer-drummers.

Countless dungeons to explore.

Endless swarms of thieves, monsters, and hungry oni standing before them.

One musical prize.

Will they survive long enough to reach it?

Congrats Newbies!

Congratulations to our newbies’ first performance!  They performed two songs, Matsuri and Mukashi Mukashi at the Canyon Crest Family Housing’s Lunar New Year Celebration this past weekend.  Our more experienced members were present as well, who performed Nanohana, Ichi Ji, Tatsumaki, and Bara Renbu.

They demonstrated professionalism throughout the day, being adaptive in an unknown environment and during the performance.  Our newbies never cease to amaze and surprise us!  Stay on the lookout for more growth within our group and for more information on our upcoming performances!

Once again, Happy New Year everyone!…

Lunar Fest 2013

We had a great weekend helping celebrate the Lunar New Year performing at the 3rd Annual Lunar Fest in Downtown Riverside!  The weather looked a little unpredictable while waiting for the opening parade, but it soon cleared up; it’s as if the gods knew what we were up to!

We helped open the festivities at the main stage along with the presentation of the albino snake, the presence of Miss Taiwan International, and the release of peace doves!  In the evening, we performed at the intersection of Mission Inn and Lemon alongside UCR’s Tiger Crane Lion Dance for our finale piece, including three of our pieces: Mukashi Mukashi, Tatsumaki, and Matsuri.

Check out pictures from the event under the “Media” tab, taken by Katherine Morano, Wesley Ng, Jonathan Godoy, and Thien Le.

Good luck on upcoming midterms and Happy Year of the Snake!…
