Nikkei Student Union’s Day of Remembrance @ UCR

On February 19th, 1942, the Executive Order 9066 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This caused more than 120,000 people with Japanese ancestry, regardless of citizenship, to be relocated to internment camps. The Japanese-Americans were charged guilty for disloyalty just because of their race. This was one of the largest violations of civil liberties shown through American history.

On February 13th, Nikkei Student Union at UCR will be holding a Day of Remembrance to take time to remember these events and the prejudice that the Japanese-Americans experienced. There will be several speakers from the Japanese-American community and beyond discussing their experiences and resolve amidst these injustices.  Senryu Taiko will be performing at the event to honor the importance of the taiko art form, a passionate medium for Japanese-Americans to reconnect with their culture after a generation of internment.

When: Wednesday, February 13 at 5:00 PM
